But I like that color…

This morning you woke up exclaiming to a darkened room…” I am going to paint this room purple!” You chose this color because it reminds you of that time on vacation when you walked into that shop and that beautiful person had on this shockingly gorgeous scarf, that made their eyes seem purple. While this is a wonderful story of inspiration, yesterday morning you signed with a Realtor® to sell your home.

Depending on the shade and depth of the color, you may be able to pull this off. I know what you may be saying:

·         It is MY HOME

·         I still LIVE here.

·         I REALLY like that color.

Yes, it is still your home. Yes, you still must live in it until it is sold, and Yes, you like that color, yet now you are looking to sell your home and attract potential buyers to the wonders of living in your home and though this purple has meaning to you, it may not have meaning to the next owner of your home.

How can we make it work?

No, I am not saying that one color choice will make or break a deal, however, what I am saying is it may determine the types of offers made on your home. Even in an unprecedented market like we are seeing in 2021, color choice pulls clients in and keeps them there. Now do not get me wrong, there are times when a bold choice, just works. For example, I recently showed a house that was painted a vibrant shade of light blue. The beauty of this shade had drawn my client to the home because it stood out.

There have been countless studies that have shown that the shade of a color has the ability to shrink or enlarge a room, and as a seller, you want your house to feel big and open. Therefore, sticking with light, more muted colors like flat beige, off-white, or a light gray. If you are sticking with the purple theme, a good paint mixologist may be able to work something out for you.

What else can I do?

What you can also do is take a lookup in your house. Are your ceilings stained or is the color “off”? You can lift your ceilings with a new coat of bright with. This will make the ceilings feel higher and it hides imperfections.
